Origin

This was a well known and popular rhyme on both sides of the Atlantic by the middle of the 19th Century and was sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Kitty Fisher was a famous 18th Century courtesan and aspiring actress, who was notorious as the mistress of several well known men of the day. She was also a neighbour and friend of Dr Johnson.
