Old King Cole

Old King Cole

Old King Cole

Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he;
He called for his pipe,
and he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three.
Every fiddler he had a fiddle,
And a very fine fiddle had he;
Oh there’s none so rare,
As can compare
With King Cole and his fiddlers three.

Origin

King Cole ruled Britain in the third century. He is said to have built Colchester. In the city there is a Roman gravel pit which is still known today as ‘King Cole’s Kitchen.’
Geoffrey of Monmouth, a 12th century chronicler, stated that his daughter was a skilled musician which could be where the King’s appreciation for music came from!
