Rub a dub dub
Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub;
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
They all jumped out of a rotten potato,
Turn ‘em out, knaves all three!
Origin
A sideshow attraction at local fairs used to be three maids in a tub who were presumably unclothed and were featured in an early version of this rhyme. It’s possible this rhyme made fun of the men who enjoyed visiting them!
The other version went as follows:-
Hey rub-a-dub,
Ho rub-a-dub,
Three maids in a tub,
And who do you think was there?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
And all of them gone to the fair.
