Wee Willie Winkie
Wee Willie Winkie runs through the town,
Upstairs and downstairs, in his nightgown.
Rapping at the window, crying throught the lock,
“Are the children all in bed, for now it’s eight o’clock.”
Origin
This rhyme was written by William Miller (1810 – 72), who was known as ‘the laureate of the nursery.’ Although the name Wee Willie Winkie was a nickname for William III in Jacobite songs, it’s unlikely that he gave this rhyme any political significance.
